Heron nesting season is upon us and the local GBH’s are very aloof.

Red-shouldered Hawk

Hamburg, New Jersey

This shot was taken recently at roadside along Route 94 and taken with my car window rolled down. I did a doubletake after driving passed a small patch of trees between 2 homes in Sussex County. Luckily I was able to turn my car around and get in position for a few shots of this Red-shouldered as it scanned for rodent prey.

84th Boonton Christmas Bird Count

After meeting with fellow Morris County birdwatchers at Empire Diner, myself, Jeff Scheidecker, and Douglas Vorolieff made way for Boonton Township. We began our bird tally at Kincaid Woods, stopped at the Rockaway Valley Aerodrome Fields, and then concluded at the Pyramid Mountain Visitor Center.

We enjoyed a bright sunny morning, crossed paths with hiking acquaintenances, and I made a few business contacts. Nice start to the holiday season!

While two Harlequin Duck hens took a break from the rough Atlantic Ocean, two Ruddy Turnstones approached from the background.

Northern Harrier at Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge

Northern Harrier

Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge in Oceanville NJ

Winter 2009

“Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.”

I liked how the silhouetted hawk in flight glided (searching for prey) just above the reeds. I also loved the pink sky tones signaling the end of the day.

One of my favorite New Jersey bird photographs, it was amazing to see the amount of force this brave Sanderling withstood.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird

Denville, NJ

Taken recently, through living room window. It only took about 3 days of having a new filled feeder out for a local Hummingbird to start visiting us. I put a feeder up in both the frontyard and the backyard and intentionally placed the feeders in habitat that includes both sunlight and a little bit of tree cover. My plan seemed to be to the birds’ liking so far.

Fact – 100% of people who think birdwatching is boring have never laid eyes on a Blue-winged Warbler. (source = Dave Blinder)

I mostly see these small birds at the tops of tall trees so this was a lucky photo opportunity.
