2019 POWWW October Foliage Hike to Hog Pen

This past Saturday, POWWW lead a group of hikers from Old Beach Glen Road up through the historic Hog Pen area of Jonathan’s Woods. Brisk morning weather quickly gave way to a sunny and mild October day.  We came across Denville Scouts Troop 118’s annual camping trip in the Hog Pen (by permission from the park commission). Great to see so many people outdoors enjoying our local natural resources!

Join us for our next free public event on November 2nd at 8:30AM at the Cedar Lake Clubhouse in Denville. Coffee, bagels, and donuts will be served. POWWW’s Annual General Meeting will summarize our events and milestones from 2019 followed by a guided hike through Jonathan’s Woods. Hiking boots, jacket, water and snack are recommended for the hike.

POWWW’s 2019 Guided Mushroom Walk

Powww’s first Mushroom walk was a great success! With 50 enthusiastic participants we covered a lot information at a show and tell table cover in a variety of fungi from at least 25 different species.

After the table discussion most of the group trekked off on the teal trail from the parking lot to do some foraging of their own were we found many more fungi to marvel at. Some we positively identified

And some were left as unknown or know only to general group.

Our next event will be the Hawk Watch Hike on September 21st. RSVP here – https://www.facebook.com/events/2455768184491915/

I loved how the trees on the horizon faded away into the foggy winter sky. I positioned my tripod so that the foreground tree guided the viewer’s eye but did not obstruct.
