POWWW‘s Annual Wildflower Walk was well attended yesterday with 23 attendees. We saw a good number of native plants and also observed migrant birds moving through Jonathan’s Woods.

Pyramid Mountain Natural Historic Area, Morris County, New Jersey

I don’t recall incorporating Skunk Cabbage into many landscape images before so I was overdue. This bend in the brook was particularly lush.

This small Rat Snake entertained my macro photography for a few seconds before we both went on our ways. Rat Snakes have a reputation for being one of the most docile wild snakes in New Jersey. They help keep populations of rodents in check and I look forward to seeing them while hiking.

Eastern Towhee at Oros Wildlife Preserve in Woodbridge NJ

Eastern Towhee

Oros Wildlife Preserve, Woodbridge NJ

I was fortunate that this bird sprung up in a mostly unobstructed area to call. It was quite unfortunate that an airplane flew directly overhead but I was able to clean up the audio a little after trying a “bandpass filter” around 3100hz to isolate the bird vocalization.

April Storm over Wildcat Ridge

April Storm over Wildcat Ridge

Rockaway Township, New Jersey

I was at the right place and right time for dramatic weather at the local hawkwatch. I’ve photographed from this vista dozens of times but have never observed such defined clouds. A seemingly ethereal light struck the foreground as sunlight permeated the sky.

Tree Swallow in Sussex County NJ

My first assumption was that the Tree Swallow was preparing its nest in this cavity. However when a Bluebird burst out of the opening and chased off the Swallow it was clear I was witnessing a different scenario.
