The snow was steady at this point of the day. I had about 4 attempts at each shot before the lens was covered in snowflakes and condensation. Luckily my mirrorless camera also has an electronic level which I can utilize through the viewfinder.

A quick snapshot on my way to refill the bird feeder this morning. Using the back of my camera and the histogram I set a manual exposure to capture the sky detail. The foreground of the image required some subsequent post-processing brightening to round out the scene.

This section of the park was fully populated with pine trees prior to Hurricane Sandy. Shrubs and deciduous and coniferous trees are repopulating the area which now lies adjacent to the main parking area for Jonathan’s Woods off of Old Beach Glen Road.

Taken this afternoon out of the living room window. Pied-billed Grebes are largely migratory in New Jersey, appearing mostly in the colder months. This Grebe was keeping pace with a small group of Mallards but was actively diving for prey.

In suburban Morris County, Pyramid Mountain is one of the best places to observe the rocky deposits of long-gone glaciers and reconnect with natural history.

Driving the course of Boonton Avenue from downtown Boonton to its confluence in Butler with Kakeout Road is an easy and relaxing way to get to Route 23 in Morris County. I always like to admire the water and woods around Taylortown Reservoir while driving through.

I had to stand on a flimsy fallen tree to obtain this clear view of the lake. As Ansel Adams noted, “A good photograph is knowing where to stand.” Overcast skies also dictated adding an extra stop of light to the exposure to emphasize the foliage.

I am continuing to explore the park throughout all 4 seasons. Grateful to have the honor of Morris Parks using my artwork for the upcoming replacement of trail signage with the Pyramid Mountain visitors center. Pyramid Mountain is a natural resource enjoyed by thousands of hikers each year, both from in state and out of state.
