Turkey Vulture chicks at nest North Jersey June 2024
If you happen to be hiking near an outcropping, hear ghostly hisses, and concurrently smell feces and vomit…. you have stumbled onto a vulture’s cliff nest. This was a first for me. Never know what you will see outdoors!!
At approximately 6AM, a portion of the group headed outside in hopes of detecting things that go “hoot in the night”. By 7AM the rest of our group rendez-voused at Kincaid Woods on Powerville Rd.

Pileated Woodpecker Pair Denville NJ September 2021
On a recent morning walk around the block in Lake Arrowhead I came across Mr & Mrs Woodpecker spiraling their ways around the base of a tree. In my experience, Pileateds may tolerate a close approach by a stealthy photographer.
This was a challenging shot in order to freeze the action of two moving birds in the shade. This lucky exposure occurred at 1/60th of a second which is a chance occurrence for handholding a telephoto lens.
