Bonaparte’s Gull at Sandy Hook

Sandy Hook National Recreation Area
New Jersey

Some life history from Wikipedia:
Bonaparte’s gull breeds in boreal forest across southern Alaska and much of interior western Canada, as far east as central Quebec and south to within 320 km (200 mi) of the Canada – United States border. It avoids dense stands of conifers, instead choosing more open areas, such as the treed edges of bogs, fens, marshes, ponds, or islands.

American Goldfinch
2009 at Troy Meadows in Parsippany NJ
Taken about 11 years ago this was an unusual photo opportunity as the finch was so preoccupied with thistle seeds I was able to walk as close as I’d like for photographs. It’s not often we can walk up to birds at point blank range to snap pictures.

All photos taken with my typical kayaking setup which is the Tamron 18-400mm VC lens + Canon SL2.  A pretty versatile tool and portable enough for me to fit inside my dry bag.

Hyper Humus Marsh, Lafayette NJ

My first assumption was that the Tree Swallow was preparing its nest in this cavity. However when a Bluebird burst out of the opening and chased off the Swallow it was clear I was witnessing a different scenario.
